I'm looking to record vocals. I bought a Behringer XM8500 cardioid mic a few years back when I first started dabbling with production, but I was getting a lot of hissing, squealing background noise when recording, and the volume was really low, like barely registering the volume when I tested it. Nothing that I tried with volume/software settings seemed to help (I was using LMMS at the time). I eventually gave up and ignored producing completely for a few years.
Now that I'm taking producing more seriously, I'm looking at vocals again but still encountering the same issues with this mic. Currently using FL Studio 12. I'm wondering what I can do to improve things, or if I should just get rid of that mic and get something better/more suitable.
I'm only looking at this as a hobby, so while I'm happy to pay better money for better kit, I don't have a big budget to play with.
My questions are:
- Would buying a better quality cable improve the volume/noise issue? (I think I just bought a cheap cable at the time)
- Do I need a mic preamp and, if so, what would you recommend?
- What microphone types are best suited for home studio recording (e.g. cardioid, condenser etc.)?
- Am I just using an unsuitable mic, or maybe just making noob mistakes and not setting it up right?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
