I started out composing in piano roll, but once I got comfortable recording my patterns live with a midi controller, its been hard to go back. Granted, Im not great on the keys, and it takes multiple takes usually. I wouldn't call myself a keyboard player by a long shot. But to make a long story short, I'm working on a thing currently where due to limitations not worth going into, I'm stuck with the piano roll. And I can't even imagine how I ever got by with it. Its not satisfying, you end up spamming the play button and It takes patience I no longer have. Anyone got any tips for getting ideas down faster in the piano roll? I've tried sketching out stuff really sparsely and then filling in the details later, but it still feels like tedium. Basically I'm looking for suggestions to make "piano rolling" a little more FUN for the purposes of this current work.
TLDR: How do you make composing in a piano roll more fun for yourself when you lack a controller for live input?
