Hey guys. I have been trying to figure this out for some time now. I wish I was better at sound design, but for whatever reason I can't pinpoint exactly what it is that is making this particular sound.
For a couple examples of what I'm wanting to recreate, listen to the following:
Start at 1:25 Illenium - Fortress
Start at :50 Bebe Rexha Martin Garrix
I think the Martin Garrix song is a better example of what I'm wanting to achieve. The sound is in so many songs and I think it sounds so good. Really seems to fill out the mid range and sounds sweet. I have a couple primary questions regarding this sound aside from just how to recreate it:
-
What particular waveforms are comprising the sound? Saws? Squares? A mixture?
-
Would this sound be considered a pad?? It sometimes seems to sound a little more aggressive than a typical pad, but it's made using chords as opposed to single notes like a normal lead. I'm probably getting a little too legalistic with what defines a specific type of sound.
-
Is the pulsing or pumping nature of the sound most likely coming from cutoff and volume automation? Is it side chain compression? Is it just a slow attack? Or something else entirely?
Any tips or references you guys may have would be super appreciated! Thanks in advance!
As a side note, I use Logic Pro X and tend to use the ES2 synth or Alchemy for most of my sounds.
