Despite picking up guitar a few years ago, I have almost always discovered and memorized chords by simply experimenting with finger placement and sound rather than knowing the name of the chord or the reasoning behind those symbols/letters. Most people that I've known who play instruments learn this kind of thing early on, so I'm not sure how to start learning now and for it to not feel forced and overwhelming. I have heard and read about chord formula, but it seems quite intimidating and hard to jump straight into considering how I've always acquainted myself with chords kinesthetically. I also change tunings and capo frets quite frequently which I assume would make learning chord formula (let alone memorizing chord names) more difficult. That being said, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong! Is there any way for me to learn how to identify chords through means other than chord formula or would it be more worth my while to just swallow the pill and put in the work to learn it now? I'm hoping that it just isn't as intimidating as it seems, but I've spent a couple hours trying to understand it yet with no avail.
