Wasn't sure how fraise my question for the title, but my problem has to do with the way I've always composed music on the piano. The issue being that there's only one voice, not the very different flow and composition of music in EDM. I can create EDM music that I'm happy with in my head, but this problem causes me to give up on %80 of the projects I start.
So when I go to start a new song, I usually mess around on my keyboard or my small midi keyboard on the computer. Sometimes I'll get something interesting and complex going on the piano and get a great idea of where I want to take it when I get to FL. But here's my issue: much of my music will be played with both the right and left hands at the same time, often very close together. From my understanding as a beginner in electronic music, there are many different synthesizers used at once. Sounds for bass play the bass notes, lead synths play the main melody. When I go to translate my song played on the piano to the computer with just one voice, it initially sounds fine. But I can only go so far, because when low and high notes are played with the same voice, it usually sounds muddy yet never sounds right to just split the left hand into a different voice or generally add new voices to a song so dominated by just one. I'm just so used to creating a whole song with one voice that I set the piano to even if that's very limiting. Adding more complexity to songs written this way just creates too much noise.
I guess in short, the way I usually create my music often leads to it sounding like I played it on the piano, then just changed the sound to a synthesiser and added some drums. My songs lack the free and organic structure of the music I listen to and instead sound overly structured and basic. The songs I make which I'm happy with are often a very basic melody that just builds complexity and momentum over time, which is fine, but those songs feel too simple and easy overall.
Has anyone else gotten into a rut like this? I'd love to hear your thoughts on how you transition you ideas from keys to the computer. Do you just keep the melody simple and in one hand then add bass later? Please let me know. And sorry for the long question, this was hard to explain but I can link some (embarrassingly bad) examples I made to help.
