As the title says, I'm a Logic user and feel relatively comfortable with it. I have Ableton 9 Intro but never upgraded beyond that as I just use it for making mix sets. Primarily I use Logic for producing Trance (my love).
I've been considering making the jump to Ableton for a few reasons, but ultimately am looking for some people to toss in some non-fanboy discussion about what else to consider before plunking down 280 or 550$ for Ableton 10 Standard / Suite.
A few reasons I'm considering switching (in no order):
- I'm generally weak on Music theory (knowing each key by heart for one), so I love how Live allows for hiding out-of-key notes in the piano roll allowing me to focus on what's in-key.
- I like that Ableton uses VST not AU, which means certain plug-ins can behave as intended (example Cthulu can write directly to MIDI without workarounds)
- I like that I could have my radio show mixes AND my production in the same DAW
- I like the horizontal channel strip layout in ableton, being able to see setting without having to open each one of them up
- I like the drum rack; not a fan of ultrabeat
- Live 10 now supports trackpad zooming (absolutely critical for me, I produce 80% on the move)
- Live 10's automation snapping
- I like that Live is Mac or PC (I have and use both)
- I like Live's file / plug-in / sounds browser approach
- I love Live 10's editing of multiple MIDI tracks simultaneously and the ability to lock MIDI notes to use as reference without messing up the original. This is big for me.
I'm sure there are more, but I'll stop there. While I do enjoy Alchemy, I'm not exactly married to any of Logic's native plug-ins.
1st QUESTION: Moving to Live is an expensive idea especially since it's not exactly a necessity. So what other things should I consider before switching?
2nd QUESTION: I have the funds available for Suite, do I NEED it? If I went with Standard (to wade into this transition to Live) what is there that would make me really wish I'd gotten Suite from the start?
Thanks for any insight you can provide!
